Electrolux Group and the UN’s Cool Coalition

Electrolux Group is replacing high-impact greenhouse gases in all appliances.

In 2019, Electrolux Group submitted a phase-out plan to the global UN-led Cool Coalition initiative to replace high-impact greenhouse gases in all its appliances with gases that have low global warming impact. High-impact greenhouse gases known as hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) are often used in refrigerators, air conditioners and other cooling devices, as well as in tumble dryers and washer-dryers with heat pumps — but there are low-impact alternatives available.

By the end of 2023, 97% of Electrolux Group products with refrigerants had switched to alternatives with lower global warming potential according to this plan. The 2023 plan has been updated and the remaining 3% of the applications, will be phased out latest by 2026.

“Tackling climate change by reducing greenhouse gases is one of the most urgent challenges in our society. As part of its commitment to the Cool Coalition, Electrolux Group has established a complete global gas phase-out plan. We are encouraging other companies in our industry to join us as we share the same responsibility,” says Jonas Samuelson, CEO at Electrolux Group.

Electrolux Group has far-reaching ambitions to reduce its climate impact. This includes the science-based target to reduce its absolute scope 3 emissions (including the use of sold products that represents around 85% of the total carbon footprint) by 42% between 2021 and 2030, and the ambition to achieve net-zero emissions throughout our value chain by 2050.

New applications We aim to use F-gas free refrigerants/foam gases with GWP ≤ 20 for any new application that is not mentioned above. However, GWP 750 is the upper limit for any new application. New applications with GWP above 750 require the approval of the Chief Sustainability Officer. ≤ 750 Global 2023
