Electrolux Grand Cuisine and Poggenpohl have partnered to launch The Fourth Wall: a complete reimagining of the home kitchen that combines Poggenpohl’s design innovation with Electrolux Grand Cuisine which empowers the home cook with the tools of the professionals.
This visionary kitchen concept is the result of a collaboration between two world leaders in design and technology. Poggenpohl has been redefining the kitchen as a space to enjoy and live in since 1892. Electrolux Grand Cuisine is the first truly professional cooking system designed for the home, with over 90 years of professional heritage behind its creation.
The Fourth Wall introduces a new take encompassing the six traditional spaces in the kitchen including the Butler’s Pantry, Larder, Wine Store, Pastry Counter, Preparation Bench and Dining Area. The Fourth Wall takes its name from the classic theatre convention that references an imagined boundary between the audience and actors. The innovative space places the kitchen at center stage and breaks down the barrier between host and guest to elevate the traditional dining experience. The Fourth Wall epitomizes open-plan living – incorporating socializing and dining into one space. The pioneering concept enables the modern kitchen to reach its full potential, functioning seamlessly for social occasions and intimate family moments alike.
Guests are taken on a journey through the various acts that form the home entertaining experience. Developments in electrochromic technology mean that intelligent glass mimics theatre curtains and shift from solid lacquer to complete transparency at the touch of a switch. State-of-the-art technology allows kitchen spaces, such as the pantry and wine cellar, to be hidden and revealed to facilitate a smooth transition from cooking area to dining room within the same space.
Creative Director of The Fourth Wall Andrew Hays says,
“I drew inspiration from historical kitchens and quite liked how the kitchens of the past celebrated food and the cooking process. I felt as a trade we were moving in the direction of hiding appliances and after seeing Electrolux Grand Cuisine, I knew I had the ideal components to create The Fourth Wall concept – a concept that combines Poggenpohl’s superior craftsmanship with Grand Cuisine’s advanced technological and design merit.”
At the heart of The Fourth Wall concept is the celebration of great food and fresh ingredients. Specially-designed fixtures mean that everything – from fruit and vegetables to meat and fish – will be held in optimal conditions of temperature and humidity until ready for preparation. Design elements reflect the very highest standard of craftsmanship and technological features have been designed with the modern cook in mind to maximize their enjoyment.
Electrolux Head of Design Lars Erikson comments,
“We transformed the domestic market in 2012 when we introduced Electrolux Grand Cuisine, an entirely new cooking system. Our vision when designing the range was to bring our 70 years of experience working with Michelin Star chefs to the home and encourage a new level of cooking. The Fourth Wall concept by Poggenpohl is a natural fit for us – it redefines the kitchen space and is inspired by treating the finest produce with deserved respect.”
