Washing Machine named 12th Most Important Invention Ever

Four household appliances are amongst the top 25 inventions in the world, according to 4,000 adults in the UK, aged between 18 and 65.

The results of the survey, carried out by Tesco Mobile (UK) to establish the top 100 greatest inventions ever, places the washing machine in 12th place, the fridge in 14th, the freezer in 17th and the vacuum cleaner in 23rd.

Further appliances in the top 100 list include the microwave (26), the kettle (40),  air conditioning (45) and the tumble dryer (51).  All of these inventions were cited as being more important than the bicycle (52), the game of football (69) and Facebook (84).  The Food blender (97) was the lowest ranked appliance – ahead of the dust pan and brush, the desk and the clothes peg (98th, 99th and 100th respectively).
