Greenhouse Sthlm: A New Benchmark for Sustainable Urban Living

About the building/project

Building: Greenhouse Stockholm
Country: Sweden
Location: Stadshagen, Stockholm
Project by: Electrolux
Year of completion: 2025

Greenhouse Sthlm has reached a major milestone. With construction of the first residential phase completed and 85 of 114 apartments now occupied, the project is transitioning from vision to lived reality. The development, created by Electrolux Group in western Kungsholmen in Stockholm, is designed as a model for modern, sustainable urban living – and early feedback from residents is very promising.

A community built for better living

Greenhouse Sthlm is located just steps from Stadshagen metro station, surrounded by parks and close to Lake Mälaren. What was once a 100% office area is being transformed into a vibrant, multi‑purpose neighbourhood where people can live, work, socialise, and thrive.

When fully developed, the district will function as a small, sustainable city within the city, with up to 3,000 people living and working in the area. The vision is rooted in the principles of the 15 minute city, ensuring that daily needs – from food and fitness to childcare and mobility – are accessible within a short walk or bike ride.

Electrolux Group, both owner and tenant, is leading the development of the first phase along St Göransgatan. The goal is clear: to enable a more sustainable and better everyday life for everyone who lives and works here.

Designed to reduce climate footprint

The first construction phase is among the first in Sweden to follow the Noll CO₂ (ZeroCO₂) certification framework, which evaluates a building’s total climate footprint across its entire life cycle.

Key strategies include:

  • Reusing existing structures rather than demolishing the 1960s property
  • Locally recycled bricks from old facades
  • Locally sourced wood that acts as a long‑term carbon sink
  • Electrolux solar panels covering the roof
  • Food waste converted to biogas which goes back to the gas-fireplaces
  • District heating from waste incineration, where one of the main challenges is to reduce the amount of fossil plastic being incinerated

Circularity and renewable materials are central to the project’s sustainability ambitions.

Shared resources for a sustainable future

Sharing is a core principle at Greenhouse Sthlm. Both residents and employees have access to:

  • Gardens and green courtyards
  • A pool and fitness facility
  • A lawn for yoga and outdoor gym
  • Cultivation lots and outdoor kitchen
  • Concierge services
  • A car and bicycle pool

Each tenant association also has its own shared spaces, including living rooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms.

Better eating at the heart of the concept

The tenant association is aptly named brf Gourmet. With Electrolux Group behind the project, every home is equipped with connected, energy‑efficient premium appliances. Residents can choose between cooking in their own kitchens, the shared indoor kitchen, or the outdoor kitchen.

Food, cooking, and everyday convenience play a central role in the Greenhouse Sthlm concept – and the kitchens reflect this ambition. Each apartment is equipped with a curated selection of Electrolux appliances designed to support better eating, reduce waste, and make sustainable choices effortless.

The Matt Black Collection: a new standard of modern elegance

The Matt Black Collection brings a refined, contemporary aesthetic to the kitchen – a modern matt finish that adds sleek, architectural character to any space. Its fingerprint‑resistant surface keeps the appliances looking clean with minimal effort, making it as practical as it is beautiful. Within this collection, three standout products elevate everyday cooking into a premium, intuitive experience: the 900 SteamPro Oven with Steamify®, the 900 Built‑In Coffee Machine, and the 900 Vacuum Sealer Drawer.

The 900 SteamPro Oven with Steamify® allows residents to bake, roast, steam, and even sous‑vide at home. By simply selecting a temperature, the oven automatically adjusts the steam level for healthier, tastier results.

A neighbourhood focused on wellbeing

Greenhouse Sthlm is designed to strengthen community ties. Meeting areas are integrated throughout the block, encouraging interaction among neighbours, colleagues, and friends. Physical wellbeing is equally prioritised, with access to a fitness centre, swimming pool, boule court, table tennis and multiple outdoor activity areas.

With employees from nearly 60 nationalities working at Electrolux Group HQ next door, the neighbourhood embodies the company’s mission to shape living for the better.

Residents moved in – and satisfaction Is high

With most apartments now occupied, the response from residents has been enthusiastic. Ulrika Kågström Head of Greenhouse Sthlm Development, describes the reception: “The mix of thoughtfully crafted homes, a comprehensive sustainability approach, and a premium, hotel‑inspired living experience, are all elements that have been appreciated by our residents.”

Kågström highlights the large communal rooftop terrace as a standout feature: “It’s a space that brings people together and gives the entire building a sense of community.”

Indoor shared spaces are equally popular. The communal kitchen accommodates larger gatherings, while the laundry lounge has become a social meeting point.

“Even the laundry lounge is designed to feel welcoming and comfortable, right down to the integrated coffee machine,” Kågström says.

A living example of sustainable urban development

With residents now settling in and the first phase complete, Greenhouse Sthlm is demonstrating what a modern, sustainable, and community‑oriented neighbourhood can look like. The project continues to evolve, but its early success shows that reducing climate impact and enjoying a high quality of life can go hand in hand.
