Electrolux Group supports the Let Green Gas Count campaign, a global effort to ensure renewable gases are properly recognized in climate reporting and to accelerate the shift toward fair, science-based standards.
The campaign brings together more than 230 organizations, including companies like Volvo Trucks, Unilever and AstraZeneca, all calling for changes to how renewable gas is treated in emissions reporting. As the only appliance manufacturer in the coalition, Electrolux Group adds the voice of the home and professional appliance industry to this growing call for change.
The campaign urges the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol, the leading global standard for emissions accounting, to include certified renewable gases, such as biomethane, as valid tools for reducing direct (Scope 1) emissions.
On November 5, the coalition delivered a joint letter to the GHG Protocol leadership ahead of the COP30 climate summit. The letter included a personalized statement from Electrolux Group, signed by Elena Breda, Chief Technology & Sustainability Officer.
Why it matters
Electrolux Group is committed to achieving net-zero emissions across our value chain by 2050. In the near term, we aim to cut Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 85% between 2021 and 2030.
While electrification is central to our strategy, some manufacturing processes, especially high-heat applications, are not yet easily electrifiable.
In these cases, biomethane offers a viable and sustainable alternative to fossil gas. Biomethane is a renewable gas with the same properties as natural gas, making it a practical solution in existing systems.
However, current GHG Protocol guidelines require a direct physical link between biomethane production and use. This limits the recognition of renewable gas when it is distributed through shared pipelines, even if it is certified and traceable.
The case for market-based recognition
Recognizing green gas certificates would allow companies to use market-based instruments, similar to those used for renewable electricity tracking, to credibly and transparently reduce emissions.
Electrolux Group supports the campaign’s call for the GHG Protocol to:
- Recognize certified renewable gas in Scope 1 emissions reporting
- Issue an interim statement confirming this intention
- Accelerate the update of emissions guidance, currently scheduled for 2028
Clear and harmonized standards will give businesses the confidence to invest in clean alternatives, accelerating industrial decarbonization at scale.
What’s ahead
The joint letter was delivered to the GHG Protocol leadership on November 5, just ahead of the COP30 climate summit in Belém, Brazil (November 10–21).
Electrolux Group will continue to support collective advocacy efforts throughout COP30 and share updates as part of our broader sustainability communications.
Our commitment
Electrolux Group was among the first 100 companies globally to adopt a science-based climate target. We aim to reach net-zero by 2050, with an 85% cut in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030 — targets grounded in climate science.
Where available, biomethane is already helping us decarbonize manufacturing by replacing fossil gas with a renewable, drop-in solution — supporting our climate goals without requiring major infrastructure overhauls.
