Ecological wash

Tapping new technologies to reduce water consumption, Electrolux Brazil design team found a range of ways to innovate a high-performance washing machine that is simultaneously an energy-and water-saving wonder.

Introduced to the Brazilian market in 2012, the Ecologic’s first innovation is apparent at first sight, as the washer contains a prominent sticker certifying it is composed of a plastic, made from renewable cane stalks.

The Brazilian Electrolux design team that crafted the Ecologic set out to create a top-loading washing machine with the best water efficiency performance in its category on the Brazilian market. Typical top-loaders average 13 liters of water per kilo of clothes washed, while the top-loading Ecologic uses 7.5.

Water-wise

In the Ecologic, water fills only the inner drum, where clothes are washed, never reaches the outer drum, as in a typical top loader washing machine, thus cutting consumption significantly.

An innovative reservoir and tap allow consumers to re-use up to 15 liters of wash water either in a new cycle, or for other tasks, such as watering a garden or washing a floor.

An innovative reservoir and tap in the Ecologic LEC12 allow consumers to re-use up to 15 liters of wash water in a new cycle or for other tasks such as watering a garden.

Sustainability and water conservation were primary drivers for the team, which assembled specifically to concentrate on this goal in product design. Ecologic LEC12 features a direct-drive motor to lower electricity consumption – the washer gets Brazil’s top classification for consumption efficiency. The innovations in Ecologic also earned the washer a nomination for the company’s internal 2012 Sustainability Awards.

The team focused on making the Ecologic benefit consumers through the 40% decrease in average consumption – equal to an average 15% savings on annual water bills – as well as the ability to reuse a portion of cycle water.
